The archipelago of Maldives is one big natural aquarium. My first dives on island Kuredu in Lhaviyani atoll on the north were my first dives with underwater camera. At that time I was still student. This was really good start. Due to lack of diving experiences I followed the »friendly instructions« of the diving guide to let the camera on the beach at least at the beginning. A few days later I was diving with my camera again and searching for colourful fishes and corals. I have made my best dives on Maldives on island Embudu Village in North Male Atoll where I also dived on Embudu Express, the most exiting diving point in this area. After jumping in the sea it was necessary do drift dive immediately to depth of 30m. There were namely very strong currents at the sea surface. When I arrived to the required depth the swarm of 10 – 15 white tip reef sharks welcomed me. The observation of two teams, divers and sharks, has been started. After a few minutes I recognized there are no more free slides on my film. Unfortunately! When I dived on the island Gan, the most south island of Maldives, marine life was not so exciting. There have been namely some bridges built between the islands and they prevented the water circulation that brings the plankton. Home reefs are due to this reason almost dead and unattractive. So, we were forced to dive at the outer reefs of Addu atoll. Here I met for the first time a big manta, lady with her own style. As she suddenly appeared from the blueness she also disappeared in the blueness a minute later. Island Gan is actually very important for my career of underwater photographer. Before one of the dives I checked my Nikonos-IVA with the flesh SB101. After the exposure the flesh exploded in my hand in front of the bungalow. After this attack to my neighbours, which were targets of the pieces of the electronic components in the flesh, I found out that it would be necessary to find any other solution. The next days I took pictures but actually I only unnecessarily wasted films. I have made the decision to put my Canon EOS100 in the appropriate underwater housing. |
